Since the beginning of freshman year of college at Penn State, I have been trying to understand the purpose of going to college to perform work in the field as an engineer. Although many say that college prepares a student for the real world and teaches them more about life, I wonder whether it is possible to do the job of an engineer without a college education. Why does it matter that I have a degree from a renowned university and am allowed to perform high tech work on the field while someone who may be just as smart and hardworking as me but has no degree is not allowed to do the same job? Is it simply because I have paid to complete coursework and have a diploma? Is it because companies only want exclusive students to work for them?
Essentially, I ponder about what the university experience really means. Perhaps I'm too young and naive now to understand this. Maybe I might look back to the present ten years later and realize all the things I really learned in college. But as of right now, I'm simply looking for clues every day to figure out the purpose of a true college education and what major goals I really want to achieve throughout my life!
